Christmas at Engadine

The Holidays are a wonderful time at Honey Hill Inn and Cabins. Engadine, our 1885 Queen Anne Victorian mansion is decorated from top to bottom for Christmas! This year, we have two gorgeous trees adorning the first floor. The largest, a nine foot tree, is in our formal parlor. We also have a smaller tree in the dining room for guests to enjoy during breakfast.

The the cover of our 2011 Christmas card features our historic barn, which was built in the 1940s by Glenn Howell for his livestock. It stands where Captain John Keais Hoyt once had his Engadine Vineyards winery where he made his famous Engadine wine. Today, the barn is still in use, even though there are no farm animals. Our nearest neighbor, Mr. Kitty, occasionally checks in for the evening to dine on small critters.

This year we have two trees in the mansion. A 9 foot tree graces our formal parlor.

Guests can also enjoy a tree in our spacious dining room.

This year Christmas weekend promises to be busy at Honey Hill. Our cabins are fully booked, but there are still a couple of rooms left in the mansion. Gretchen and I will be working and enjoying every minute of our second Christmas at Honey Hill Inn and Cabins!

There's a Chill in the Air!

It has been a while since I posted anything to this blog. We had a very busy October and November and the weather was fantastic. But before we knew it, there was frost on the pumpkin (an old New England saying).

Dolly, our 10 month old Chihuahua Shih Tzu mix, is pictured here. While she enjoys a warm fire, she happily suits up to go for a walk with the rest of the pack (Gretchen, Oliver and me). In case you are wondering, Miss Dolly is sporting a corduroy 'double-breasted' Woolrich jacket!

Sweet Bird's Nest

Sometimes it's the simple things that are the most beautiful. This is a tiny birdhouse attached to the front of one of our cabins. I'm not sure if our groundskeeper placed the nest there, or if it was the work of a mother bird. I'd like to think it was the mother bird!

20 Romantic Outings in Asheville

I was just doing a websearch for a guest who is interested in a carriage ride in Asheville, when I discovered this great article on www.sheknows.com. Not only did the article provide information on carriage rides on the Biltmore Estate, but gave an additional 19 ideas for romantic, fun things to do in the area - both indoor and outdoor activities.

Here is a link to the article: http://www.sheknows.com/living/articles/1594/20-romantic-outings-in-asheville

Note: Unfortunately the links in the article do not work, but you should get some good ideas for things to do during your visit to the Asheville area!

Late Afternoon Light at Honey Hill

Sometimes it's the little things that take your breath away. We caught some gorgeous afternoon light that created a cherub silhouette against the front steps of the mansion.

Meet Biskit - Honey Hill Inn and Cabins' New Critter

The other day, Gretchen was up on Honey Hill tending to the wildflowers when she found a box turtle. She immediately called our friends to tell them. "How big is it?" they asked. "About the size of a biscuit," she replied. Well, she's more like the size of a Big Mac, but Biskit sounded better!

Here is Biskit relaxing in her water dish. Welcome to Honey Hill!

DuPont State Forest Waterfalls

Gretchen and I don't get out very often, but this year we decided to take the Tour de Falls, hosted by the Friends of the Dupont State Forest. The Tour de Falls is held twice a year, in May and September. It is a great way to see the waterfalls in a short amount of time. We saw three waterfalls and a lake in the forest, all by bus with the assistance of a tour guide. Visitors on the tour can hop off the bus and visit each waterfall at their leisure. When you are ready, you can get on the next bus and go on the the next waterfall.

Of course we had our camera handy!

This is Gretchen at High Falls.

Triple Falls

Take a look at our new road sign!

We finally have our new road sign and it is a beauty. No more getting lost, no more wrong turns! We are proud to report that one of our guests who is a professional sign maker designed and made the sign for us. Her name is Norma Jeanne Maloney and her business is Red Rider Studios in Austin, TX.  She shipped the sign from her studio in Texas and it arrived in perfect condition. A local artisan, Gene Monson, designed and built the framework. Gene also did the installation and was an absolute pleasure to work with. Everyone did a fabulous job!

What's Buzzin' at Honey Hill

Welcome to Honey Hill Asheville's new blog!

The staff has been working like busy bees to prepare for the 2011 season. Gretchen and Sharon have been doing a lot of gardening. They planted wildflowers up on Honey Hill, tended to the flower gardens and have planted vegetable and herb gardens outside our kitchen. We embrace the "farm to table" concept at Honey Hill. Gretchen uses fresh herbs, vegetables and berries in her breakfast menus - picked fresh from our gardens, of course!

The Mary Hoyt room and the Howell room recently got makeovers. Gretchen and Cheryl stripped wallpaper, painted, varnished, and redecorated. Both rooms look fabulous!

Here is the Mary Hoyt room. We uncovered this lattice board in the alcove by accident. The lattice and the wallpaper in the alcove were covered by a layer wallpaper that was beginning to peel. In the process of removing the "old" wallpaper, we discovered this beautiful lattice and lovely wallpaper in the alcove. Nice surprise!

The Mary Hoyt Room

This is the Howell room. We updated it with different wall color, new bedding, and new window treatments. This is a dramatic change from the dark rose walls and lace curtains!
